A student has to choose one subject from each group. Starex encourages that at least six subjects be chosen. These must include one language and one subject from each group. The sixth subject may be taken from any group.

The Advanced Level examination is intended primarily for students who have studied the subjects for a period of two years beyond the ‘O’ Level or IGCSE stage.

The advance Level is split into ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level.

The ‘A’ Level examinations are currently available in June and November but in the future Starex will offer only the May option.

‘AS’ Level is intended primarily for students who have studied the subjects for a period of at least one year beyond the ‘O’ Level or IGCSE Stage.

‘AS’ Level usually entails taking one or more of the ‘A’ Level papers. The ‘AS’ Level syllabus covers about half of the material of ‘A’ Level syllabus. (This is for selected individual components only)

The part of the ‘A’ Level which is not included in the ‘AS’ Level syllabus is sometimes referred to as the ‘A2’ syllabus because it would be covered in the second year.’A2’ does not exist as a qualification. Candidates who have studied the ‘A2’ part of ‘A’ Level syllabus should appear for the ‘A2’ components.

Grades available for ‘A’ Level are A, B, C, D, and E. It is necessary to identify the subjects one wants to take up. It is also necessary to think of the university one is going to attend - Indian universities or move on to U.K., U.S.A, etc. and choose the subject combinations accordingly.

One should also earmark the admission requirements of the institution. For example, in the U.K. Chemistry is required to study Medicine whereas in India it is advisable to take all three sciences

The number of subjects a student takes depends on the requirement of the course of study at the university one is heading for.

In various countries various number of 'A' Level are desired. Three 'A' levels is a minimum choice of subjects.

ASSESSMENT FORMAT
The 'AS' and 'A' Level is a very beneficial staged method of Assessment System.

Most schools that take the 'A' and 'AS' Level, take the 'AS' after one year of study and complete the 'A' Level in the same subject the following year.

For example, in Mathematics papers 1 and 4 can be studied at the 'AS' Level and the rest of the papers studied at the A2 Level. Hence, a combination of the 'AS' and 'A2' Levels forms the 'A' Level.

Each subject in each Level has various papers allocated.

HIGHER EDUCATION PROSPECTS AFTER 'A' LEVEL

With the new emerging pattern of educational needs now, many students aspire for a stint overseas for which the GCE 'A' Level has a definite advantage.

The 'A' Level gives a cutting edge to its students. Not only is it possible for the students to get admission in any Indian College/ University but the student also gets into Colleges around the globe easily. Certain certified Colleges in the U.S. even give Cambridge Students extra credits for university entry. Students doing 'A' Level do not have to appear for the TOEFL in many US Universities.
